The York Town Crier

The York Town Crier

The York Town Crier is a traditional figure who plays an important role in the historic city of York. The Town Crier serves as an official announcer of news, events, and proclamations in the community. The Town Crier dresses in elaborate and colourful attire, often including a tricorn hat, a bell, and a scroll containing the announcement.

In York, the role of town crier has been upheld by various individuals over the years, each contributing to the city's rich tradition and heritage. The town crier is often seen at special events, festivals, and ceremonies, where they add a touch of historical charm and theatricality.

Ben Fry is York’s current Town Crier and is in his second stint as the City’s Bellman after making more than 700 proclamations between May 2019 and December 2023.

Ben is also a presenter on YorkMix radio and the Chief Enchantment Officer of The Potions Cauldron Group which includes 5 venues in York.

A passionate supporter of York, Ben sees the role of Town Crier as his opportunity to give back to a city that has given him so much.

The main focus of the York Town Crier is to support the Lord Mayor of York and the Civic Party, and to champion local good causes, support the community and promote charitable events.

If you want to book the York Town Crier to attend your event or support your local good cause, you can fill out the Contact The TC form.
